Welcome and thank you for your interest in the Marine Biology and Ecology (MBE) graduate program at the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science. If you consider yourself a marine biologist or want the training to become one, then you’ve found the right place. MBE offers MS and PhD degrees with original research in the form of a thesis and dissertation, respectively. What makes us unique is the excellence of our faculty and our location in the subtropics, which is perfect for marine field studies. We are a venerable program going back 70+ years, with an affirmed record of excellence and impact on the scientific community. As an example, our ~36 MBE graduate students published >30 papers last year in the scientific literature.
MBE also offers Master of Professional Science degrees (MPS) in tracks called Marine Mammal Science, Tropical Marine Ecosystems Management, Aquaculture and Fisheries Management & Conservation. The MPS is an accelerated degree that is self-funded and substitutes an internship for the thesis. For much more on the MPS degree program, visit the MPS webpages here.
In MBE, MS and PhD students can choose from a diversity of research areas and coursework taught by internationally recognized scientists studying corals and climate change, fisheries biology and conducting biomedical research. MBE faculty, students, and their many international collaborators participate in multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary research programs that provide a broad educational perspective. These topics provide a rich environment for students choosing thesis and dissertation topics under the supervision of our excellent faculty.
The Department of Marine Biology and Ecology knows that good science and innovation need different approaches and points of view that can only be achieved through diversity. We are continuously striving to create an environment where everyone feels empowered to be their full, authentic selves. Please join us!
To stay up-to-date with our news and events, please follow us on Facebook. I encourage you to email faculty members directly with specific questions about their research, and whether they are recruiting PhD students for next fall. Reach out to me with further questions about the MS and PhD degree programs. The staff of our Graduate Studies Office is well informed about our graduate programs and they can be reached at gso@earth.miami.edu.
