Apply to Our Graduate Programs 

We welcome you to apply to our graduate programs. One special feature of our application process is that you can apply for more than one Rosenstiel School degree (PhD, MS, MPS) on a single application. Applying for more than one degree will not negatively affect your application in any way—your application will be given equal consideration by all reviewers.

If you wish to apply for PhD or MS degrees, please review the application instructions on this page. You will also be able to apply for MPS on the same application if you choose this option. If you apply for PhD/MS and MPS, you will receive separate admissions decisions from each program. Admission decision letters are sent by email. If you are admitted to more than one program, you have the opportunity to choose between them.

  • Getting Started

    All applicants should review undergraduate preparation requirements and recommendations for a competitive application. In addition to satisfactory scores (as judged by the graduate program) on the appropriate tests, the general requirement for admission is a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum 3.0 GPA. If you have any questions about these requirements, please contact the Graduate Program Director for the program you are interested in.

    When submitting an application, prospective students must indicate the program(s) of interest. The online application will allow you to submit one application to multiple Rosenstiel School graduate programs (PhD, MPS, MS) with no additional application fee. Applying for more than one program will not negatively affect your eligibility for any of those programs.

    For PhD and MS applicants only, the online application will ask you to identify up to 5 faculty with whom you would be interested in meeting if you are offered the opportunity to interview. We encourage you to review faculty associated with various research areas and the list of available research assistantships. Please note your application will be considered regardless of your selection. Applicants are welcome to contact faculty via email before and during the application process, but this is not required.

  • Dates and Deadlines

    For best chances of fall admission into one of our PhD or MS programs, your complete application including all supporting documents must be received in the application period of September 1 - January 8. However, complete applications received by December 1 will have the highest chance of being invited to our on-site annual recruitment weekend visit in early February.

  • Required Application Documents

    Please use the online application which can be found here.

    • For PhD and MS applicants only: use the application to identify up to 5 faculty with whom you are interested in working. See Getting Started above for more details on this.
    • PDF of Statement of Purpose describing your goals and objectives in pursuing a graduate degree. If you have already identified Rosenstiel School faculty with whom you are interested in working, please be sure to include this information here as well.
    • PDF of unofficial domestic transcripts. See below statement on transcripts for more details on this.
    • Three letters of recommendation from persons well situated to evaluate your qualifications for graduate study. The online application will ask you to enter your recommenders’ email addresses for the Rosenstiel School recommendation letter form to be sent to them.
    • Non-refundable application fee ($85).

  • Transcripts (Domestic Applicants)

    Attach unofficial transcripts (pdf format only) of all prior domestic institutions attended for application review purposes. Unofficial domestic transcripts uploaded within the application may be used to initiate the review of your application. However, if admitted, it is your responsibility to submit all official transcripts by July 1. Transcripts forwarded by you (even if they are in a sealed envelope), issued to you, or those that list you as the "recipient" are NOT considered official and will not be accepted. Official transcripts must be sent directly to the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School, Graduate Studies Office (address below). For any institution allowing electronic transfer of the official transcript, please use gso@earth.miami.edu as the delivery email address.

  • Transcripts (International Applicants)

    Unofficial transcripts uploaded cannot be used to initiate the review of your application. The Rosenstiel School requires international applicants to complete a course-by-course evaluation with GPA to initiate the review of your application.

    Submit the following educational documents to an approved international credentialing evaluation service for evaluation:

    • Official original diplomas and certificates in the original language
    • Official original transcripts in the original language (names of courses, grades, and hours of instruction) for every year of study.
    • NOTE: Documents in a language other than English must be accompanied by professional, certified English translations. Translations supplement, but do not replace the official documents.

     

    Where to Submit Documents for Evaluation

    • Josef Silney & Associates (JS&A), Inc, International Education Consultants, is the preferred evaluation vendor for international applicants to the University of Miami due to their competitive prices and high-quality service. Click here for more information including the Application for Evaluation of Foreign Educational Credentials.
    • Please note that international applicants are not required to use the services of JS&A. The international credential evaluation services of any approved vendor may be used. Click here to view a list of approved vendors.
    • Please be sure the vendor sends your evaluation directly to gso@earth.miami.edu.
    • Evaluation Fee - Applicants are responsible for the evaluation fee.
    • Please note that failure to comply with these instructions may cause significant delays in the review and processing of your application, and therefore also significant delays in the processing of your I-20.

  • GRE (Optional)

    The GRE is not required for admission. You may optionally submit your GRE score, but not all programs will consider this information. In some of our programs, individual faculty members may consider available GRE scores as part of a holistic evaluation of the candidates. To submit an official score report, please use institution code 7690 (there is no department code).

  • TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo (International Students ONLY)

    International applicants whose native language is not English must submit official English language testing results from either TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo. An exception to this rule is an international student who will have earned a degree in the US or select other English-speaking countries (click here for details) prior to enrollment at the Rosenstiel School.

    Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores can be submitted using institution code 2919. There is no department code for score submission. A minimum score of 550 (paper-based test), 213 (computer-based test), 80 (iBT) is required for admission. 

    International English Language Testing System (IELTS) using institution code 4862. There is no department code for score submission. A minimum score of 6.5 for the IELTS is required for admission.

    Duolingo English Test  (DETselect “University of Miami - Graduate School” from the Duolingo English Test’s institutional list. A minimum score of 125 is required for admission.
